Skill 13, Five Point Ascent (STELAR)

How to complete a 5 point scuba ascent:

Use the acronym S.T.E.L.A.R

  1. Signal: Signal to all divers that the dive is ended, make sure all divers see the signal clearly and are present
  2. Time: note the time, ensure no decompression limits have been exceeded
  3. Elevate: elevate the Low Pressure inflator hose
  4. Look up: make sure there is nothing above you, make sure no other divers are in the way and that your path to the surface is clear
  5. Ascend : begin to slowly ascend,
  6. Rotate: lift your right arm above you and rotate making sure no objects are in your way, allow air to escape from your BCD as you ascend no faster than 18m or 60 ft per minute
  7. Swim: swim to the surface, do not rely on the air in your BCD to control your ascent to prevent a rapid uncontrolled ascent
